During the occupation, the childless couple took in a child of their Jewish friends from the Korzennik family. The girl was always presented as Apolonia\u2019s niece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tragically, the Germans learned about the Jewish girl in hiding. On 28 May 1943, functionaries of the Jas\u0142o Gestapo arrived at the Gaco\u0144 household. Following brutal interrogation, they murdered both the child and her caregivers. The bodies of the victims were buried at the execution site. A few weeks later, the bodies of the Gaco\u0144s were moved to the Catholic cemetery.
