In autumn 1942, Jewish refugees from the nearby ghettos that were being liquidated by the Germans went into hiding in the woods near Annopol. Apolonia and Piotr Likos of Opoka Duża initially provided them with food and clothing. When winter came, they took a dozen people under their roof, including members of the Brener, Kestenbaum and Chyla families, as well as Estera Zakalik and Iza Ler. The Likos’ adolescent daughter Natalia also helped to care for them.

Following a denunciation, German gendarmes came to the farm on the morning of 1 June 1943. They fired at the buildings, captured Piotr and Apolonia Likos and Iza Ler, and then murdered all three. The remaining Jews and Natalia managed to escape into the forest.

Fearing the death penalty, the girl hid in various locations. Only after the war did she return to her destroyed home and bury her parents in the local cemetery.
