A grave at the top of the hill
At the top of the hill between the villages of Bukowa and Januszkowice, there once stood the farm of Apolonia and Stanisław Gacoń. During the occupation, the childless couple took in a child of their Jewish friends from the Korzennik family. The girl was always presented as Apolonia’s niece.
Tragically, the Germans learned about the Jewish girl in hiding. On 28 May 1943, functionaries of the Jasło Gestapo arrived at the Gacoń household. Following brutal interrogation, they murdered both the child and her caregivers. The bodies of the victims were buried at the execution site. A few weeks later, the bodies of the Gacońs were moved to the Catholic cemetery. The body of the Jewish girl remains buried at the site of the tragedy.
